CApIC-ACE Partners Capacity Building Training for Cancer Genomics Research

The four-day 2024 edition of the CApIC-ACE Capacity Building Training for Cancer Genomics Research was hosted by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH). The training aimed to enhance the research capabilities of graduate students, research assistants, and clinicians in cancer genomics. Courtesy calls were made to the Management the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital to secure support for cancer research activities. The Chief Medical Director of UNTH pledged increased research funding.
The training sessions facilitated by CApIC-ACE experts led by the Centre Leader, Prof. Emeka Iweala, the Applied Research Coordinator, CApIC-ACE, Prof Solomon Rotimi, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, CApIC-ACE, Prof Olubanke Ogunlana, and Dr. Itunu Isewon featured topics on cancer genomics research, national partnerships, biospecimen science and basic bioinformatics tools and their application for cancer genomics research The training emphasised the importance of bioinformatics tools, high-quality biological specimens, and ethical patient recruitment in cancer genomics research.
Furthermore, the training provided a deeper understanding of cancer genomics, leading to increased interest and collaborative research initiatives among participants. It highlighted the potential for improving cancer survivorship and reducing the disease burden in Africa. The training also facilitated the development of new research projects and grant applications. Feedback harvested from participants showed that the workshop had greatly enhanced participants’ understanding of cancer genomics and its importance in improving patient outcomes.
