CApIC-ACE in collaboration with Leadway consults, Nigeria organized the capacity building workshop on malaria microscopy. The training conducted by WHO malaria microscopists was aimed at providing the requisite knowledge and skills to the participants on Malaria parasite detection, Speciation and Enumeration
Topics taught include Transmission and Lifecycle of Malaria Parasite, Malaria Microscopy, Preparation of blood smears, Preparation of Buffer, pH 7.2, Giemsa Stain Preparation and Staining, Microscopy, Reading of slides, Parasite Speciation, Parasite Quantification, Quality Assurance in Malaria Laboratory Diagnosis. Impact: The training provided graduate students and research associates with world-class training and understanding of malaria microscopy, which will help accurately detect and diagnose various malaria parasites. This will help in reducing the disease burden in Africa. The training also facilitated the development of graduate students and research associates as future trainers licensed by WHO on standard Malaria microscopy. Testimonials: "This workshop was timely for the research associates who are about to embark on their research work, and it has greatly improved our microscopy skills and prepared us better for clinical research" – Feedback from participant
